Downtown Stuart Is Running Four Stages at Once This Fall

Walk down Flagler Avenue on a Friday night this fall and you will pass a marquee that has hung there since 1925, a tiki bar with a national touring band on the outdoor stage, and a free concert winding down by the river, all within about fifteen minutes on foot. A few miles east, a musical theater now in its 56th season is closing out its latest run the same weekend. None of these venues are new to Stuart. What's new is how often their calendars now land in the same week.

That overlap is the real story of this fall's entertainment lineup. Stuart has had a historic theater, a community stage, and a live-music bar for years. The shift is in the density: between mid-September and mid-November, at least three of the four are running a ticketed or free show at the same time, in a downtown small enough to cover on foot.

Who's Playing Where

The 1925 Marquee Still Books National Acts

The Lyric Theatre at 59 SW Flagler Avenue opened in 1925 as a silent movie house. It closed during the Depression and passed through several owners over the following decades before a nondenominational congregation bought the building in 1978 and held weekly services there until they built a facility of their own. The Lyric eventually became the nonprofit performing arts venue it is today, a 500-seat room that keeps every show feeling close regardless of where you're sitting.

That scale is part of why the Lyric can book acts that don't need an arena. Singer-songwriter Edwin McCain plays the Lyric on October 7. The Artimus Pyle Band already came through earlier this fall. For a theater built before talking pictures existed, it still sets the bar for what a big night out in Stuart looks like.

A 56-Year-Old Stage Closes Its Run the Same Week

A short drive from downtown, on SE Ocean Boulevard, The Barn Theatre is in its 56th season, and its current production of Sister Act closes the weekend of September 25 through 27. During that same stretch of September, A.C.T Studio Theatre staged Fools, and the Martin Artisans Guild filled the CHCC Gallery with its "Fall Into Art" show, both tracked on the Arts Council of Martin County's own cultural calendar. Neither of those is downtown in the walkable sense the Lyric and Terra Fermata are, but the pattern holds: Stuart's fall arts calendar doesn't take turns between venues. It stacks them.

The Free Option That Already Wrapped for the Season

If a ticket wasn't in the plan, Riverwalk Stage at 121 SW Flagler Avenue has been the answer. The city's free Rock'n Riverwalk series ran Sunday afternoons on at least five dates this year, from August 9 through September 20, on the same stretch of Flagler that leads up to the Lyric a few blocks away. No cover, no reservation, just a lawn chair and whatever the city booked that week. The series wrapped for the season right as the indoor, ticketed calendar started to fill in behind it.

The Bar That Never Really Has a Slow Night

A short walk off Flagler on SE 6th Street, Terra Fermata has booked live music seven nights a week since it opened in 2012. Most nights don't require a ticket at all. Entry is typically free unless a bigger touring act is on the bill, and this fall there are several of those. BOBFEST, a Bob Dylan tribute led by Pat Guadagno, plays October 18. Jerry's Middle Finger follows on October 23. Completely Unchained, a Van Halen tribute, takes the stage October 24. Halloween night closes with a Nirvana tribute called Nirvanna, opening with a Creed tribute set from Arms Wide Open. The lineup runs into November, with Hillbilly Surfers featuring Doug Macrae booked for the 19th.

What Four Overlapping Calendars Actually Change

None of this means Stuart suddenly has more venues than it used to. It means the same four now land in the same weeks often enough that a night out stops being a question of whether something is happening and starts being a question of which room fits the mood. On the last weekend of September, Sister Act closes at the Barn the same weekend the Lyric preps for a national touring songwriter, and Terra Fermata still has a full slate two blocks off Flagler for whoever wants to keep the night going.

A town with one reliable venue has a calendar. A town where four venues keep landing in the same three-week window has something closer to a season, with a price point and a genre for whichever night you pick.
